This checklist is designed to help you stay on track leading up to and during your moving day. We recommend printing it and keeping it on-hand throughout your entire move.

8 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Start collecting estimates from moving companies – including a free moving quote from Reliable Delivery at www.sdreliabledelivery.com
  • Budget for moving expenses
  • Create a “move file” to keep track of quotes, receipts and other important information
  • Start researching your new community

7 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Start compiling medical, dental, shot and prescription records
  • Arrange to have school records and veterinarian records transferred.
  • Gather copies of legal and financial records
  • Call your insurance agent to see what changes you need to make to your new policy
  • Contact health clubs, organization, and groups to cancel or transfer memberships

6 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Plan how you will move valuables and difficult to replace items
  • Begin purging your home. Separate items into those you will keep, donate or discard.
  • Plan a garage sale
  • Call your insurance agent to see what changes you need to make to your new policy
  • Contact health clubs, organization, and groups to cancel or transfer memberships

5 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Order boxes and moving supplies from Reliable Delivery
  • Begin packing items you don’t use often
  • Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it is destined for
  • Pinpoint your move date
  • File a change of address with the Postal Service



4 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Reserve your move by emailing your completed Agreement for Moving Services to reliabledelivery@gmail.com or faxing it to 858-228-4362
  • Notify these utility services of your move (both at your old and new locations):

  • Electric
  • Water
  • Gas
  • Telephone
  • Cell phone
  • Cable/Satellite and internet
  • Sewer
  • Trash Collection
  • Make travel arrangements for your pets
  • Put copies of pet medical and immunization records in your move file
  • Host a garage sale

3 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Plan how to transport your plants, pet furniture, or any flammables
  • Dispose of flammables, corrosives, and poisons

2 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Notify these professional services of your move:

  • Notify these government offices of your move:
  • City/County Tax Assessor
  • State Vehicle Registration
  • Social Security Administration
  • State/Federal Tax Bureau (IRS)
  • Veterans Administration
  • Assemble a folder of important info about your house for the next home owner.

1 Week Before Your Move

  • Notify friends and family of your new address and phone number
  • Pack an essentials box to keep with you during the move
  • Drain gas and oil from lawn equipment, gas grills, heaters, etc
  • Drain water hoses and waterbeds
  • Empty and defrost refrigerator at least 24 hours before the move
  • Read the packet, Important Information for Persons Moving Household Goods in California. We will require a receipt to be signed indicating you received this as well as read the information in this letter before your move begins.

Moving Day

  • Everything other than furniture should be packed in boxes, sealed and ready for loading unless packing services have previously been requested. No unboxed items will be transported
  • Mirrors and pictures over 3ft are safest left on the wall for the movers to wrap and secure properly
  • Books or other heavy items must be packed in small moving grade boxes
  • Lighter items should be packed in larger boxes, but no box should weigh more than 30 lbs. Overweight boxes will not be covered by insurance
  • Four (4) wardrobe boxes will be provided on moving day if requested 48 hours in advance. Please be prepared to load and unload these on moving day as they must be returned at the end of your move
  • All items must be removed from the inside of your furniture. Furniture will not be moved unless empty
  • All electronic equipment and small kitchen appliances must be boxed
  • Payment is due at the end of your move so please remember not to pack your checkbook or wallet!
